RENOVATION

BEFORE COATING

APPLICATION

Realiable substrate preparation prior to the application of coatings

SIMPLY CREATE A SUITABLE SUBSTRATE FOR COATING APPLICATION

Do you want to renovate an existing room such as a hobby cellar or areas of disused outside
buildings such as old barns and to apply a floor coating with a modern appearance? Do you
need substrate preparation to form a reliable barrier to rising residual damp and allow safe
use?

We have the solution! Using the right THOMSIT products, you can effectively renovate
and prepare surfaces for subsequent coating. Make things easy with this THOMSIT
renovation system.

THE RENOVATION SYSTEM IN ACTION

Substrate Preparation

If necessary, sand or mill the surface to
remove traces of old laying materials.

1.a) Use a properly prepared high-strength epoxy resin mortar made up from THOMSIT R 755 Epoxy safety primer and silica sand (50% each of QS 10 and QS 20) to fill any holes or chips in the surface. The mortar will be fully cured after 24 hours. Apply THOMSIT R 755 to any edges in advance to ensure firm bonding to the substrate. For the epoxy resin mortar, we recommend that you use one part of THOMSIT R 755 and 10 parts of silica sand. After the mortar has been allowed to dry for 24 hours, you can proceed to the next stage.

1.b) Following mechanical preparation and any filling work, seal the surface by applying two coats of THOMSIT R 755 Epoxy safety primer.

2. In the case of floors only exposed to low loads, prime the surface with undiluted THOMSIT R 766 Multipurpose primer before applying the leveling compound. In the case of floors exposed to high loads and leveling compound thicknesses above 10 mm, scatter THOMSIT QS 10 silica sand over the second coat of THOMSIT R 755 Epoxy easy primer while it is still wet to ensure bonding to the leveling compound.

3. Apply THOMSIT XF 500 Premium leveling compound with a layer thickness of at least 5 mm and allow it to dry for 12 hours.

4. After an appropriate drying time, you can start with the installation of the coating system. Important: Please follow the separate installation instructions and observe the requirements stated in the technical data sheets. We recommend Sika coatings such as Sikafloor®-2510W.

Renovation before coating application?

Renovation with a system

In the case of larger chips or breakouts, you should initially apply undiluted THOMSIT R 755 Epoxy safety primer to the edges of the surface to be coated. For filling, use an epoxy resin mortar made up of one part of THOMSIT R 755 epoxy safety primer and 10 parts of THOMSIT QS 10 and QS 20 silica sand (mixed). After filling, or if the surface is already intact, apply two coats of undiluted THOMSIT R 755 to provide a barrier against rising damp. To ensure good bonding to the leveling compound, use THOMSIT R 766 Multipurpose primer for surfaces subject to low loads. In the case of high loading or leveling compound layers with thicknesses above 10 mm, scatter THOMSIT QS 10 silica sand over the second coat of THOMSIT R 755 while it is still wet to ensure bonding to the leveling compound. Then apply THOMSIT XF 500 Premium leveling compound with a layer thickness of at least 5 mm before applying the coating. We recommend you to use approved Sika coating systems.

1. THOMSIT R 755 Epoxy safety primer

for repairing breakouts together with
QS 10/QS 20 sand and to provide a barrier
against rising damp.

2. THOMSIT R 766 Multipurpose primer

concentrated multipurpose primer to enhance
bonding before the leveling compound is
applied.

3. THOMSIT XF 500 Premium leveling compound

for leveling layers up to 30 mm as a suitable
load-bearing layer prior to the application of
coating systems.
